Nov 26 Raising $$ is a "false positive" -- it sounds like winning, but really you're just starting. A 'true positive' signal -- our ecom brand just hit 100k fans in a private FB group. There's no special perks or discounts. Just a place for people who love the brand to hang out. https://t.co/fEJkVnj72N 209 3 35 27.7k 299 .

Aug 19 1/ I don’t run 2/ I don’t care about people who run 3/ And yet… I’m fascinated by this guy (Truett Hanes) who runs marathons in jeans.  I love it not because of the running, but because of the marketing. This is a perfect example of what Seth Godin called a Purple Cow.  If you see a cow on the side of the road, it’s forgettable.  But what if you saw a purple cow. WHAT?! You pull over, take pictures, and tell all your friends.  99% of companies are just cows in their marketing. Forgettable. This guy pulled a perfect purple cow. Running a marathon in under 3 hours wearing jeans.  Even though he’s not the fastest runner - he gets more media coverage, sponsorships and attention than everyone else in the race (combined). Find your purple cow. 302 13 62 67.9k 753 .

Jun 26 Podcasting with a buddy (like I get to do with @thesamparr) is the stone cold nuts of content No algorithm stress, no editing, no constant whipping out phone to capture every moment. Just hanging out 1-2 hours a week, and nerding out about your favorite stuff If there was no money and no fame, I’d still enjoy doing it I wonder if that’s true for other media (YouTube, TikTok)..? 654 11 70 98.1k 384 .

May 13 This is stolen from my talk about how to create great things. “Reduce” is one of the 4 Rs https://t.co/5w7YfG3gVZ 27 1 1 7.8k 114 .
May 13 I love this so much. On Rick Rubin’s first album, instead of “Produced by rick rubin” he wrote “REDUCED by rick rubin”  Rick The Reducer  It’s always been a curious thing… why is Rick Rubin so successful?  - Can you play instruments? “...barely”  - Do you make beats? “no” - Do you write songs? “nope” At first I thought maybe he’s just a dude coasting on his zen aura and A++ beard. But that doesn’t explain how you win 9 Grammy’s, co-found Def Jam, and help produce hits in every genre from Rock to Rap to Pop over 30+ years.  “The most important music producer in the past 20 years” - MTV Rick calling himself a ‘reducer’ rather than a ‘producer’ is a good hint at his genius. But that sounds so general. What does it actually mean?  You ask and the youtube gods giveth us an example: Check out this video below of Jay Z recording with Rick. Rick tells him “maybe we start acapella” (no beat, no background vocals, no sound effects). That became the iconic intro to the song 99 Problems.  Golden nugget #1 – “when you add layers to make it bigger….The more you add, the smaller it gets” - Rick Rubin  Golden nugget #2 – as a creator, we often have a draft or prototype that’s “not great yet”. The urge is to ADD to make things better. But the great artists show us that we should REDUCE it down. Instagram started as an app called Burbn with all kinds of features (Friends! Locations! Check Ins! Points! Photos!) — but when they hit a wall, they decided to REDUCE features. Going all in on photos with filters. They removed 90% of the app features…and yet the app got 10X more valuable. Addition via subtraction. 273 11 18 35.5k 1.6k .

May 09 We all start with the ability to recognize greatness. We know what we like. We have taste. But our ability to create that greatness? It lags way behind. So we make something. We look at it. And we think: "This f*cking sucks." But The Taste Gap isn't a sign you're failing. It's a sign you're on the right track. Ira Glass continues: “We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work.” Here's the secret: No first draft is good. Not Stephen King's. Not yours. The ones who make it are the ones who keep going despite the gap. So next time you create something and that voice in your head says "this sucks" - remember the janitor from Maine who almost threw away Carrie. And keep going. -Uncle Shaan 118 11 8 15k 834 .

Jul 26 I love bloggers like Paul Graham, Tim Urban, and Naval. But one thing blogs lack is the back and forth banter that you get in podcasts. So I started thinking - could I make an insightful blog that has the banter of a podcast? It's the greatest mashup since the Doritos Locos Taco. Well - I tried it. And I think I love how it turned out. (the blog idea, not the taco) Check out the first post with @george__mack and let me know what you think 👇 485 18 99 111.4k 449 .
