20% increase in MRR from a simple upsell with the correct sales angles
The usual customer would be willing to pay $12 /month for an essay writer
The student with his dads credit card would be willing to pay whatever is necessary for good grades
So what did we do? We added a Pro version sold as an exclusive version of the software limited to higher grade students only
We sold this like only Harvard kids could buy. Anyone with a credit card could.
$12 /month plan was an essay writer
Rich kid upsell plan had pre written A+ essay templates from real papers, custom/detailed prompts, access to Ivy League past tests, AI Flashcards, AI study guides etc.
Best part about this is that it wasn’t usually the students buying, it was the parents purchasing a system to get their child the best education possible.
This upsell made us so much extra money and gave the software a big reputation.
The upsell worked so well because we sold it in the correct way and positioned it as a privilege to get access to.
It didn’t succeed because of the features.
